Redwood National Park Family Trip
Ready for Your Family’s Giant Redwoods Adventure?
Home to the tallest trees on Earth, Redwood National and State Parks protect a prehistoric landscape where massive coastal redwoods—some living for over 2,000 years—tower more than 350 feet into the Pacific mist. Located along the rugged Northern California coast, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a sanctuary of ancient old-growth forests, including the world-famous Stout Grove and Lady Bird Johnson Grove. Beyond the giants, the park features the prehistoric “tunnel of green” known as Fern Canyon and the pristine, undammed waters of the Smith River. From the moss-draped canopy to the vibrant tide pools of the Pacific, the Redwoods offer an immersive experience in a cathedral of green that feels largely untouched by time.
You can experience the quiet majesty and diverse coastal ecosystems of these ancient forests in Redwood National and State Parks

-DAY-BY-DAY
Itinerary
We’ll shuttle to the Lady Bird Johnson Grove for a short hike to learn how these towering giants were saved before parents head out for a challenging ride on Holter Ridge while the kids enjoy a scenic section of the Davison Trail.
You’ll get a close-up look at the world’s most diverse forest, shaped by the moderate coastal climate and high winter rainfall, before meeting back at camp for the evening.
Everybody rides this morning toward the dramatic bluffs above the ocean, stopping at Gold Bluffs Beach to swim, spot seals and pelicans, and enjoy a trailside lunch.
We’ll hike through the lush tunnel of green in Fern Canyon and return to our camp at Elk Prairie, where we have a great chance to see the resident elk herd that frequents the area.
We’ll start the day on the Coastal Trail, riding through giant trees along old-growth forest roads and singletrack bluffs with spectacular overlooks of the vast Pacific Ocean.
Keep an eye out for giant banana slugs before we shuttle to our camp at Jedediah Smith Campground, named for the early American pioneer who explored this wilderness in 1826.
Today is float day on the wild and scenic Smith River, where we’ll meet our river outfitters to soak up the relaxing scenery of California’s only major undammed river system.
We’ll stop mid-float for a hike through Stout Grove—considered the most beautiful stand of redwoods in the world—and finish with exciting Class I rapids and a riverbank swim.
We finish our trip biking the beautiful Howland Hill Road past the Grove of the Titans before taking a coastal walk to the boulders and tide pools of Hidden Beach.
After exploring the anemones, sea stars, and crabs in the tide pools, we’ll continue north to Lagoon Creek for a celebratory final lunch to mark the end of our adventure.
